چکیده

SimVis is an interactive research implementation of a visual analysis scheme which we developed for the feature-based assessment of flow simulation data. It is based on the concept of multiple, linked views of different kinds, including views from information visualization such as adapted scatterplots and histograms. In this paper we present an extension to our interactive visual analysis framework, which allows to handle data resulting from CFD simulations which are based on timevarying grids. For interactive and efficient handling of such large data sets, several optimizations had to be realized in the system. Furthermore, we demonstrate the application of our visualization approach in the context of an industry-level application, namely the visual analysis of CFD data from the simulation of combustion in a specific diesel engine. Here we especially focus on the description of how researchers and engineers use the SimVis approach to successfully investigate concrete user questions.

An adaptive framework for visualizing unstructured grids with time-varying scalar fields

Interactive visualization of time-varying volume data is essential for many scientific simulations. This is a challenging problem since this data is often large, can be organized in different formats (regular or irregular grids), with variable instances of time (from hundreds to thousands) and variable domain fields. It is common to consider subsets of this problem, such as time-varying scalar ...

Interactive Feature Specification for Focus+Context Visualization of Complex Simulation Data

Visualization of high-dimensional, large data sets, resulting from computational simulation, is one of the most challenging fields in scientific viualization. When visualization aims at supporting the analysis of such data sets, feature-based approches are very useful to reduce the amount of data which is shown at each instance of time and guide the user to the most interesting areas of the dat...

Interactive Visual Analysis of Multi-faceted Scientific Data

V isualization plays an important role in exploring, analyzing and presenting large and heterogeneous scientific data that arise in many disciplines of medicine, research, engineering, and others. We can see that model and data scenarios are becoming increasingly multi-faceted: data are often multi-variate and time-dependent, they stem from different data sources (multi-modal data), from multip...

Interactive Transfer Function Specification for Direct Volume Rendering of Disparate Volumes

Transfer functions play a critical role in feature detection through direct volume rendering in volumetric scalar fields. Because of the inherent difficulties of exploratory visualization, assisting the user in transfer function specification is still an important area of research. In particular, the disparate nature of simulated and measured volumetric data necessitates more flexibility in the...

Interactive Focus+Context Analysis of Large, Time-Dependent Flow Simulation Data

Visualization of time-dependent simulation data, such as datasets from CFD simulation, still is a very challenging task. In this paper, we present a new approach to the interactive visual analysis of flow simulation data which is especially targeted at the analysis of time-dependent data. It supports the flexible specification and visualization of flow features in an interactive setup of multip...
